F. Javier Salas Rey. Doctoral School Director

Javier Salas (Madrid, 1964). B.S. in Geography (1989) and Ph.D. in Cartography, GIS and Remote Sensing (1994) at the University of Alcalá.

Pre-doc visiting at the Forest Fire Laboratory of Riverside (California), Department of Geography of University of California at Santa Barbara, and Department of Geography of University of Nottingham (United Kingdom). Post-doc visiting at the Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group of University of Montana (USA), Department of Geography of University of Cambridge (UK), and Department of Land, Air and Water Resources of University of California Davis.

Associate Professor (2001-2017) and Full Professor (from 2017) of Geography.

More than 30 years of experience researching environmental applications of remote sensing and GIS, with a particular focus on vegetation, forest fire, and change detection cartography (Scopus h-index: 17). Scientific collaborator and coordinator in several regional, national and EU funded projects.

Extensive experience in training students on Geographic Information Technologies, mainly with Remote Sensing, at BS, MSc and PhD levels.

Broad experience in management: Secretary (2001-2004) and Dean (2004-2010) of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences; Deputy Head of the Department of Geography and Geology (2011-2013), Head of the Department of Geology, Geography and Environment (2013-2018), and Director of the Doctoral School (since 2018).

School Vicedirector

Cristina Tejedor Martínez. Subdirectora Escuela de Doctorado

Cristina Tejedor Martínez (Cuenca, 1967) holds a BA (1990) and a PhD (1995) in English Philology from the University of Alcalá. 

She is the coordinator of the AnLing research group (Linguistic Analysis). She has supervised and collaborated in various research projects, which have helped her to develop her research activity. Her research interests are lexical study and analysis, semantics, lexicography, terminology, comparative linguistics and translation, second language teaching and languages for specific purposes. She has been a Visiting Researcher in several universities, such as West Virginia University (USA) (1992), University of Santa Barbara (California, USA) (1996), University of Limmerick (Ireland) (2003) and Western Sydney University (Australia) (2016); during the academic year 2017-18 she was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Graduate School of Education after obtaining a grant from the Real Colegio Complutense. This research career has been recognised with the award of the Young Researchers Award of the University of Alcalá (2002) and four periods on research work.             

She has developed her teaching activity having held several positions (1991-1996) and since 2001 being Senior Lecturer at the University of Alcalá. Her teaching practice has been related to the lines of research developed, mainly Lexicology, Semantics, Lexicography and Terminology applied to translation.

Regarding her service at the University, she has held numerous positions of responsibility in the administration of the University. She has been appointed Secretary of the Department of Modern Languages (2000-2001); Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Humanities (2001-2003); Convener of several Doctoral Programmes at the Department of Modern Philology (2005-2019);Coordinator of the English section in the Master's Degree in Teacher Training (2010-2017); Coordinator of Modern Languages and Translation Degree (2013-2015); University Mobility Programmes Coordinator for the United States and Canada (2011-2019) and Coordinator of International Promotion (2019-2020).

School Vicedirector

Irene Heredero Bermejo. Vicedirector of Doctoral School

Irene Heredero Bermejo (Guadalajara, 1986) has a Degree in Biology and a PhD in Health Science from the University of Alcalá. She carried out her postdoctoral training at Indiana University – School of Medicine in the United States (2017-2019), where she obtained an AHA Postdoctoral Fellowship (2018) to lead a research project. In 2018, she was also selected as a candidate for the Talent Attraction Grants Program. Since 2019, she has been Assistant Professor of the Department of Biomedicine and Biotechnology in the area of ​​Microbiology.

She belongs to the “Biotechnology and Microbial and Parasitic Ecology” research group at the University of Alcalá. She has participated in and led various regional, national and international research projects, mainly related to the identification and characterization of pathogenic microorganisms, and the study of the biocidal activity and mechanism of action of new molecules.

She develops her teaching activity in undergraduate studies, teaching Microbiology subjects in the Faculties of Sciences, Medicine, Environmental Sciences and Pharmacy. In addition, she has led and participated in teaching innovation projects for the adaptation of the flipped classroom methodology in the laboratory teaching sessions on the Microbiology Area.

Academic Committees of the Doctoral Programmes

Each Doctoral Programme has an Academic Committee composed of the Programme Coordinator and at least one representative from each of its lines of research. As the body responsible for the Doctoral Programme´s training and research activities, the functions of the Academic Committee are:

Functions of academic committees:

  1. Accountability for the training and research activities of the Doctoral Program, as well as the coordination of research stays.
  2. Support and personalized advice in the processes of information, admission and assignment of the persons in charge of tutoring and thesis direction and when applying for stays abroad.
  3. Assessment and reporting on applications for the incorporation and withdrawal of students to the Doctoral Program, prior to submission to the Doctoral School for approval.
  4. The assignment of tutors to the students of the corresponding Doctoral Program; also, modification of tutors at any time during the period of the doctoral program, if there are justified reasons for doing so.
  5. The assignment of thesis supervisors to the students of the corresponding Doctoral Program, within a maximum period of 3 months from their enrollment; as well as their modification, at any time during the period of the doctoral program, if there are justified causes.
  6. Authorization of thesis co-supervision when there are academic reasons, such as thematic interdisciplinarity or programs involving national or international collaboration; also, revocation if the co-supervision does not contribute to the conduct of the thesis.
  7. Approve the Research Plan of the Doctoral Program and submit the agreement to the Doctoral School for registration in PDF format.
  8. Annual review, with possible modifications, of the Research Plan and the document of activities of the students of the corresponding Doctoral Program, as well as of the reports of their tutors and thesis supervisors.
  9. The authorization of thesis completion by compendium of articles in publications of recognized prestige.
  10. Authorization to carry out a thesis in co-supervision.
  11. The authorization of stays and activities outside Spain during the period of training of doctoral students intending to obtain the international mention.
  12. To report on and decide applications for industrial doctorates.
  13. The definition of the exceptional circumstances that affect the non-publicity of certain thesis contents, as stated in section 6 of article 14 of Royal Decree 99/2011.
  14. Authorization of the deposit and examination of the thesis of each doctoral student in the program.
  15. Proposal of the thesis examining panel.
